About or Between - 4
Standards for Mathematical Practice: #2, #3, and #6
In this routine, students estimate results. They will practice estimating for the operations beyond using rounding, such as using friendly numbers. Students will estimate to find an about answer or to find a range that the actual result will fall between. This routine comes from Daily Routines to Jumpstart Math Class (Corwin, 2019).
DIRECTIONS:
- Students will come to the front of the room with no supplies.
- Share expressions for students to work with. You may want to share one expression at a time.
- Have students estimate the sum, difference, product, or quotient. Or have students find the range for the exact result to fall in.
- Have students share their estimates and strategies with a partner.
- As a group, have students share. Record their estimates/ranges for the expressions. Be sure to record multiple results.
- Facilitate a group discussion. Consider asking the following questions.
-
- How are the estimates related?
- What strategy did you use to find your estimate?
- How was your strategy efficient for you?
- How did your estimate compare to others?
- How could there be more than one estimated solution?
- Why did you choose to find a range instead of finding an estimation?
- How did you find the range?
- How do the estimates compare to the range?
- How precise were the estimates?

These slides include directions and questions to ask during the group discussion. There are 20 sets of multiplication expressions to use that progress along with the standards as taught throughout the year.
