MCAP

Text G5 Mathematics MCAP

The Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) in mathematics asks students to demonstrate their understanding of mathematics by solving real-world problems, making sense of quantities and their relationships, and reasoning mathematically. It is one of several measures we use to measure our students’ growing understanding of mathematics content.

Design Blueprint

This High-Level Blueprint describes the structure and content of the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) Grade 5 Mathematics Assessment by subclaim. HCPSS elementary mathematics scope and sequence and the design of the grade 5 assessment are guided by state and national recommendations including Achieve the Core’s Mathematics Focus by Grade Level.

Evidence Statements

The MCAP mathematics assessment development process is based on Evidence-Centered Design. Evidence statements are provided for each standard to describe the type of evidence that a task addressing the standard should elicit.

Practice Resources

MCAP practice tests are available to get familiar with the format of items and the electronic tools on the test. The practice test does not replicate the content or quantity of items related to given content on the assessment. Using HCPSS module assessments is highly recommended because they emulate the rigor and computer-based testing environment of MCAP.

Modifications to Address Supporting and Additional Content

Below is guidance for addressing grade level content taught later in the year which could be assessed on MCAP. Teams and teachers can choose to follow one or more of the suggestions. But first, it is important to remember that:

    • Our scope and sequence is designed with direction from national and state recommendations to focus on major works (Achieve the Core Links to an external site.)
    • MCAP design also reflects those recommendations which you can read about in the test Blueprint and Evidence Statements linked above.
    • Know your students’ strengths with major works (i.e., operations, fractions, problem solving) and needs with supporting topics like geometry. Use your understanding to guide decisions. Suggestions or modifications may not be implemented the same in each classroom.
    • Remember that students do not have to memorize conversions (i.e., feet to measurement) and formulas. Students have access to this Reference Sheet Links to an external site. during the test. Consider using it during instruction.
    • Maximize math instructional time by minimizing disruptions and math class cancellations.
    • Talk with your administrators to schedule MCAP math later in the window to allow more time for teaching content.
    • Note that these adjustments are unnecessary for AGL and GT classes.

Scope & Sequence

The scope and sequence is designed to spend the most time with the most critical work in a grade level. It is designed so that topics build over time. If you have concerns about teaching certain topics before the assessment you can follow the guidance below.

Do This... Because...

Teach Module 6 for an additional week, using mixed number multiplication tasks currently in Module 7.

This will provide enough time to fully teach multiplying with fractions in one module.

Teach the remainder of Module 7 after Module 12.

This will allow volume, which is part of the major content for Grade 5, to be fully instructed prior to the administration of Grade 5 MCAP.

Reserve 3 days at the end of Module 8 for the instruction of the 3 tasks for 5.OA.1 and 5.OA.2 (find in Module 12).

To connect decimals, place value, and exponents to expressions.

Routines

The routines below are familiar. The math office has adapted them to feature geometry and other supporting content. Consider using these in place of your number routines, including Number Talks as appropriate.
