ANIMATE A NAME

Overview

Today I will learn to navigate and identify key parts of Scratch by animating a name using block-based programming.

Motivation

STEP 1.

  Directions: Select the play button to begin, What is Scratch? Links to an external site. As you view this video, think about how Scratch is similar to some of the other coding activities you have used in the past .

  Directions:  Reflect on what you just saw. How is Scratch similar to other programming activities you've completed before? Think back to Hour of Code, Make Wonder with Dash, Code.org tutorials, Scratch Jr, etc.

What past coding experiences have you had? How are they similar or different to the programming language used in Scratch?

STEP 3.

  Directions: Select the play button to begin Animate A Name With Google Links to an external site.. As you view this video, pay attention to how Olga goes between the tabs of her computer to watch tutorials and then go back into her project to add the code into her project.

Activity

STEP 4.

  Directions: Follow along with your teacher to navigate to the Animate a Name Project in CS First and select Starter Project to get started.

  • Login to CS  First Links to an external site. as a student.
  • Select Your Class, then select the Animate a Name Unit.
  • On the right hand side of the screen, scroll down until you see the link to the Starter Project, found under the blue "Link" heading. Select Starter Project to access the project.

  • Select "Choose a Sprite," then Select "Letters," and select the first letter of your name.
    • Choose a Sprite Image     Sprite Letters Category Image
  • Repeat the step above until you have all of the letters in your name in the stage area.
  • Use the videos below the Introduction video in the "Choose an Add On" section to learn how to program the letters of your name.

  • You may also follow the Animate a Name Links to an external site.tutorial Links to an external site. tutorial cards below to create the algorithms needed to animate your name using Scratch in CS First.

If you are having a difficult time, remember, this is just a time to explore. You are not required to complete the entire tutorial.  You will learning more about CS First and the Scratch interface during Technology over the next few weeks!
