Grade 5 Digital Citizen Cornerstone Task Summary

Summary

Fifth graders have become experts in the field of digital citizenship.  This cornerstone task requires students to reflect on what they have learned during about digital citizenship and apply it to problematic online situations.  The students will work in groups to create an Advice Column, Podcast or Public Service Announcement (PSA) and respond to the given situations as experts.

Standards

Digital Citizen

Students recognize the rights responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical.

 Writing Standards

W.5.1 Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.

W.5.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

Speaking and Listening Standards

SL.5.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.

SL.5.4 Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.

 

Considerations

  • Consider showing a example of each platform choice with a brief description of each. Consider ways to help the class manage their time.
  • Guide student groups using the Google newsletter gr5_dc_cornerstoneStudentAdviceColumn  Links to an external site.and Wixie project gr5_dc_cornerstoneStudentPodcastTemplate Links to an external site. in setting up the collaboration element with their group.  
    • For the Google newsletter, one student will make a copy.  Click “Share” and type in the group member names. The team members will see the newsletter template in the “Shared With Me” folder.
    • For the Wixie Podcast, one student will open the template.  Click “Team” and select the members of the team from the list.  The team members will see the template in the “My Projects” section of Wixie.
  • Student photographs will be included in this project either through photo or video.  Students on the Do Not Photo list can still partake in this part of the assignment, however, be cognizant of the fact that if the final project includes a students photo or voice that you should ensure that it stays within HCPSS or ask parent permissions for them to be shared outside on school website or social media, etc. Student faces can be blurred or place an emoji over the face if needed.
