TEacher Considerations
So often we hear that students are struggling with placing their hands in proper positioning for keyboarding. Unlike playing a musical instrument, where improper technique yields incorrect sounds, when students use poor keyboarding form they are still rewarded with the key displaying on the screen. What students don’t realize and understand is that by building poor habits they are lessening their ability to efficiently use their time for tasks that require typing in the future. This lesson seed and a Student Facing Module was developed as a mid-year review of proper keyboarding form with your students. As always, please feel free to modify or adapt any of these resources to meet the individual needs of your students.
Lesson Seed: Give students a Pencil and ask them to lay the pencil down on their desk next to them. Then tell them to pick up the pencil only using one pointer finger. Students will find that they have to move the pencil so it hangs off the table, so that they can wrap their pointer finger around it to pick it up. Have them place the pencil back and pick it up using their hand with no restrictions. This illustrates the point that while they can pick up the pencil with one finger and achieve success rather quickly, it’s not an efficient use of time. Provide students an opportunity using a collaborative idea generator tool (Mentimeter, google draw, etc.) to brainstorm ways that they may use keyboarding in school, in a career, in a sport, etc.
