Activate background knowledge about digital media. Ask students what different types of digital media do they use at home or at school. Possible answers - photographs/images on a camera, computer, cell phone, or other device, movies, and songs. Share with students that there are many different types of digital media files. Share that some files are audio/sound files, some are visual files that you can see, and some files are both audio and visual. Ask students what devices or technology tools could you use to view audio and visual files. Possible answers include video game device (Wii, Xbox, etc.), computer, iPad, iPod, tablet, television, cell phone, etc…

Show examples of digital media. Possible choices are images and sound files from “Culturegrams Links to an external site..” When in the “Kids Edition Links to an external site.,” there are audio files for national anthems and visual files in the photo gallery, slide shows, etc. You could also select images and sound files related to a current curricular topic. Have students indicate if it’s an audio or visual file by pointing to eyes if it’s visual file, ears if it’s an audio file, or both for a file that is audio visual.

Use Google Draw to model collaboration. Have students use a teacher created Google Draw to make a collaborative drawing. For students to see collaboration happening from another location, have students take a computer to another location in the school or in the hallway with a partner and add a detail to the Google Drawing.

Assessment and Closure Seeds: Multiple Means of Action and Expression

Have students use a teacher created template which includes examples of digital and non-digital sources or images of information. Have students sort the choices. The Wixie sticker library contains digital and non-digital sources of information, such as MP3 players, books, newspapers, computers, etc. Take screenshots of file icons that are visual and audio.

icon-seed-50px.jpgSeed 2

Have students use a shared Google Document to create a collaborative poem or silly version of a classic story, such as The Three Little Pigs. Students could select different animals, locations, etc., to rewrite the story. Some students may benefit from having story starters and/or frames to support completing the writing task. Some students may need lists of family words to use in the rhyming poem. Additional supports could be pre-written lines for the poem with different rhyming words to select. Students will delete the choices that do not match the selected rhyme.

Active participation in “iPPop Links to an external site.” collaborative activity.

Identify three digital media tools that can be used collaboratively. Use an application with a sticker library, such as Kidspiration or Wixie, and have students show technology tools that can be used to view different types of media. For example, students can add images of eyes or ears to show if the media is visual or audio. Some students may use text boxes to type visual or audio. Additionally, some students may need a pre-made template with images to select from or delete to demonstrate understanding of the concept. Another option would be clicking and dragging images of different forms of media to the corresponding technology tool.
