Lesson: Global Cultural Connection

A lesson seed collection is a menu of ideas that can be used to build a lesson. To build a lesson, select a Motivator Seed, a Lesson Seed, and a Assessment & Closure Seed. Use the Additional Activities and Resources for additional ideas, and remember to cue videos prior to instruction in order to avoid advertisements.

Reading

RI7 Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).
SL1  Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
SL2  Determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
SL3  Ask and answer questions about information from a speaker, offering appropriate elaboration and detail.
SL6  Speak in complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification.

Writing

W6 With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting.
W8 Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; take notes and categorize information, and provide a list of sources.
W9 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

Math

MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

  • Use technology communications tools (e.g., online forums, blogs, email, text messaging, chat, voice over IP (VoIP), videoconferencing) to interact with students or experts from other cultures, communities, or countries on a collaborative, content-specific activity or project.

Teacher Considerations

  • Weebly for Education Links to an external site. - (Blogs) Create a teacher website (you can have multiple editors on a teacher website so that you can collaborate with another class across the county) and include blog pages so students can blog with each other in class. Be sure to consider monitoring options when setting up the blogs for students.  Since "Weebly" is a supplemental digital tools, please provide parents and option to opt out and follow guidelines on the Supplemental Digital Tools list.

    • Students can evaluate the information they received and discuss the benefits of real time communication.
