Using the Criteria for Choosing Tools

Teacher Considerations

  • Before using any chat rooms, review netiquette and appropriate language. Be sure to stress the difference between social and academic chat.

During the lesson, instead of using Inspiration to brainstorm and record ideas, use one of the online tools like “Padlet Links to an external site.,” orAnswer Garden Links to an external site.,” etc. For the final product, introduce wikis or Google Sites. Students will work in pairs to design webpages to  show the differing opinions of these groups. Students could design each page using the voice and perspective of a Patriot or a Loyalist.

Designing an International Food Court” - Working in pairs, students research information using “CultureGrams Links to an external site.” about an assigned country’s climate, landscape, and food. Students can use Google Spreadsheet to compile their findings to share with the class.  Using the class data, pairs of students will begin constructing a 3D model of their international food court using Google SketchUp, or Google Drawing.

Designing an International Food Court”- Working in small groups, research information using “CultureGrams Links to an external site.” about an assigned country’s climate, landscape, and food. Students will create a Google Earth tour of different regions researched. Students can post their Google Earth tours on a blogging website. Students can compare and contrast the tours in the comment section.

Students can publish their personal narratives in the style of the viral sensation, Draw My Life Links to an external site.. Students can take screencasts using Quicktime while illustrating their lives in Pixie or another drawing tool. Or students can draw their images in Pixie, import them into iMovie, and then add narration and music. After students import their screencasts into iMovie, they can narrate and add music. Students can export and embed the movie into a wiki or blog where other students can comment.

Create a Technology “Twitter Links to an external site.” account and have one student per week tweet out information about classroom events to the parents. Or create an account with “Twiducate Links to an external site.” to give students real practice with using social media in a secure environment (microblogging).

Students create and embed a Google Calendar on a student-created website that is shared with the community. Students can add important dates about classroom events to the calendar.
