The Missing - K

Kindergarten mathematics Routine

The Missing

Standards for Mathematical Practice: #1, #2, #5, #7, and #8

In this routine, students are asked to find specific missing numbers with few markers to offer support.  This routine reinforces counting and skip counting.   This routine comes from Daily Routines to Jumpstart Math Class (Corwin, 2019).

DIRECTIONS:

1.  Students will come to the front of the room with no supplies.

2.  Display a number chart with missing numbers (see slides below).

3.  Fill in numbers on the chart that can be used to find the targeted missing number.

4. Have students find the targeted missing number.

5.  Facilitate a group discussion.  Consider asking the following questions.

    • How did you find a missing number?
    • How did some of the known numbers help to find the missing number?
    • Did anyone find the missing number in a different way?
    • How was your strategy similar or different from your classmates' strategy?
    • Does your strategy for counting always work?
    • Are there other ways to count that would be more efficient?
    • Why was counting on by ones the best strategy for fid this number?
    • How did you use tens to help you find a number that wasn't just 10 more?

VIDEO:

In the video, notice how the teacher asks the students to identify the target numbers by asking what number is missing? She asked the students how they figured out what number was missing. The teacher asked the students if they figured out the number a different way. After a student shared, she asked the class if they agreed or if they thought something different. Notice how the teacher asked the students to turn and talk to identify three consecutive targeted numbers. She highlighted strategies such as using place value language, asking about the number before the targeted number, counting on, looking at all the numbers in the column/row, counting by tens, and had a student come up to double check his work.
