Start With / Get To

Kindergarten Mathematics Routine

Start With / Get To

Mathematical Practice #6

Purpose: Counting - K.CC.1, K.CC.2, 1.NBT.1, 1.NBT.2, 2.NBT.1, 2.NBT.2

In this routine, students practice rote counting from any given starting number. Start with/Get to helps students develop fluency with counting sequences, starting at any number within the known range. It helps to connect numerals (15) to their number name (fifteen). It also helps students develop a sense of the magnitude (size) and relationship among numbers.

It is recommended to put ‘Start with’ numbers in a green bag and ‘Get to’ numbers in a red bag.  The range of numbers should be adjusted throughout the year to meet curriculum standards and student needs. The contents of the bags can also be swapped from time to time to produce a backward counting sequence or a skip counting sequence. It is important to utilize the 120 chart and/or number line during this routine to connect counting to visual tools. The open number line may also be used as a representation of student thinking. These tools and hundred charts beyond 120 can be found in the resource bank.

DIRECTIONS:

1.  The teacher selects a ‘Start with’ number and a ‘Get to’ number.

2.  The teacher marks the numbers on a number line and/or 120 chart.

3.  Students are asked, “What do you notice?” Students may notice a variety of things related to the numbers and their relative placements on the line; they may also notice whether the selected numbers will produce a forward or backward counting sequence.

Examples pulled from the ‘Start with’ green bag and the ‘Get to’ red bag could include:

  • Start with 80, get to 94
  • Start with 74, get to 100
  • Start with 10, get to 0
  • Start with 14, get to 3
  • Start with 10, skip count to 100

Grade 1 Examples:

  • Start with 12, get to 21
  • Start with 12, get to 31
  • Start with 25, get to 59
  • Start with 31, get to 72
