Report Card Information
- Look at the report card as a whole rather than looking at just the grades.
- Understand the Comments and Evaluation Codes on your student’s report cards.
- Know that letters indicate Academic Progress and numbers indicate Learning Behaviors.
- Take advantage of the opportunity to talk to the teacher at conferences
The video below explains how to access your child's report card in Synergy.

Academic Reporting Codes for PreK-2 (SBIR):
In order to give the most accurate information about how a student is learning grade-level standards, HCPSS will use three performance categories. Our goal is that all students achieve an “M”, the performance category that indicates students have demonstrated that they met the expectations for the targeted measurement topic and standards for that grade level. These performance codes increase clarity and quality of information. Three codes allows for variation and accuracy; this gives students, families, and teachers information about relative strengths and weaknesses for students.
M = Meets Expectations
- “M” indicates the student is independently applying and achieving the grade-level expectations toward the standards.
- The student demonstrates learning and makes relevant connections.
- The student consistently demonstrates understanding and skill with content described in the academic standards.
P = Making Progress Towards Expectations
- “P” indicates the student is progressing toward applying and achieving grade-level expectations toward the standards.
- The student may require additional time, support or monitoring.
- The student demonstrates some understanding and skill with content described in the academic standards.
- Student performance is inconsistent.
L = Limited/No Progress Toward Expectations
- “L” indicates the student is demonstrating limited proficiency with the grade-level expectations toward the standards.
- This student requires additional time, support, intervention or monitoring.
- The student demonstrates little (to no) understanding or skill with content described in the academic standards.
- Student performance contains significant errors.
What to Expect - Teacher Guidelines for Report Card Comments Grades PreK-2:
- Each report card will have a comment highlighting a student strength.
- If a student is working on standards other than their grade level, there will be a comment to clarify which grade level standards the student is working on. This is currently for mathematics only. There will be a comment if this applies.
- If a student is marked “L” in a measurement topic, there will be a comment to help clarify what the student should continue working on/receiving support. There will be a comment for each measurement topic in which this applies.
- If a student is marked “3” in a Learning Behavior, there will be a comment to clarify which skills the student should continue working/receiving support. There will be a comment for each learning behavior in which this applies.
Academic Reporting Codes for Grades 3 -5:
A = Consistently meets expectations (90% or higher)
- “A” indicates the student is achieving the grade-level expectations of the standards.
- The student consistently demonstrates understanding of content and applies the skills required in the academic standards.
B = Frequently meets expectations (89% - 80%)
- “B” indicates the student is achieving the grade-level expectations of the standards.
- The student frequently demonstrates understanding of content and applies the skills required in the academic standards.
C = Making sufficient progress toward expectations ( 79% - 70%)
- “C” indicates the student is progressing toward the grade-level expectations of the standards.
- The student may need more instruction, support, or monitoring to meet the grade level standard..
- The student demonstrates some understanding of the content and applies some of the skills required in the academic standards.
D = Making insufficient progress toward expectations (69% - 40%)
- “D” indicates the student is progressing toward the grade-level expectations of the standards.
- The student routinely needs more instruction, support, or monitoring to meet the grade-level standards.
- The student demonstrates minimal understanding of the content and applies some of the skills required in the academic standards.
E = Limited / No progress toward expectations (39% or below)
- “E” indicates the student is demonstrating limited proficiency with the grade-level expectations of the standards.
- The student requires more instruction, support, and monitoring to meet the grade-level standards.
- The student demonstrates little (to no) understanding of the content and is unable to apply the skills required in the academic standards.
What to Expect - Teacher Guidelines for Report Card Comments Grades 3-5
- Each report card will have a comment highlighting a student strength.
- If a student is working on standards other than their grade level, there will be a comment to clarify which grade level standards the student is working on. This is currently for mathematics only. There will be a comment if this applies.
- If a student is marked “D” or "E" in a measurement topic, there will be a comment to help clarify what the student should continue working on/receiving support. There will be a comment for each measurement topic in which this applies.
- If a student is marked “3” in a Learning Behavior, there will be a comment to clarify which skills the student should continue working/receiving support. There will be a comment for each learning behavior in which this applies.
