6.NS.8 - About the Math, Learning Targets, and Increasing Rigor

Grade 5AGL The Number System

6.NS.8

Full Standard

Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.

Learning Targets (I can)

  • Explain the distance between 2 coordinates in the context of a problem.
  • Graph points to solve problems.

About the Math

  • Explain the distance between 2 coordinates in the context of a problem.
  • Graph points to solve problems.

Students find the distance between points when ordered pairs have the same x-coordinate (vertical) or same y-coordinate (horizontal).
Example 1: What is the distance between (–5, 2) and (–9, 2)? Solution: The distance would be 4 units. This would be a horizontal line since the y-coordinates are the same. In this scenario, both coordinates are in the same quadrant. The distance can be found by using a number line to find the distance between –5 and –9. Students could also recognize that –5 is 5 units from 0 (absolute value) and that –9 is 9 units from 0 (absolute value). Since both of these are in the same quadrant, the distance can be found by finding the difference between the distances 9 and 5. (| 9 | - | 5|). Coordinates could also be in two quadrants and include rational numbers. Students graph coordinates for polygons and find missing vertices based on properties of triangles and quadrilaterals.

Essential vocabulary for this standard includes: rational numbers, opposites, absolute value, quadrants, coordinate plane, ordered pairs, x-axis, y-axis, and coordinates.
