6.RP.2 - About the Math, Learning Targets, and Increasing Rigor

Grade 5 AGL Ratio and Proportion

6.RP.2

About the Math

Full Standard

Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, “This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar.” “We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of $5 per hamburger.”

Learning Targets (I can)

  • Describe unit rate.
  • Identify common or prevalent real-world unit rates and explain what those rates determine.
  • Use unit rates to solve problems.

About the Math

We can write ratios in different ways depending on the purpose they are serving. We use unit rates in many ways during our day. We can solve unit rates and/or ratios in different ways as well. Students should be able to use representations, such as tape diagrams or bar models, before acquiring abstract, computation-based procedures. Essential vocabulary for this standard includes: ratio and unit rate. Visit the online dictionary Links to an external site. or visual math dictionary Links to an external site. for vocabulary support.

Progression of Standard within Grade 6 (5 AGL)

This progression informs how to develop the standard within the grade level. This progression is provided by HCPSS Elementary Mathematics.

Progression Throughout Year
Quarter 1 Quarter 2 Quarter 3 Quarter 4
  • Describe unit rate.
  • Identify common or prevalent real-world unit rates and explain what those rates determine.
  • Use unit rates to solve problems.

Progression of this Standard Across Grades

This progression is informed by the Achieve the Core Coherence Map Links to an external site.. Information is not the complete standard.

Progression Across Grades
Grade 5 Grade 7
  • Interpret a fraction as division (5.NF.3
  • Divide a fraction by a whole number and a whole number by a fraction (5.NF.7)
  • Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions (7.RP.1)
  • Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities (7.RP.2)

Instructional Tasks

TASKS

These tasks can be used with small group or whole group instruction.

  • Jim's car drives 255 miles using 15 gallons of gas. Asha's drives 228 miles using 12 gallons of gas. Who's car gets the better gas mileage? Explain how you know.
  • A 32-gram serving of Cinnamon Life contains 9 grams of sugar. A 55-gram serving of Raisin Nut Bran contains 16 grams of sugar. Which cereal has less sugar per gram of cereal? Explain how you know.
  • How would you describe a unit rate? Give some examples of unit rates you have seen in your home, your school, and/or a store.
  • It cost Amel $6.00 for every 2 pounds of apples bought. If Amel spent $24.00 explain how many pounds of apples she bought. Justify your reasoning.
  • My mom can do 57 sit-ups in 3 minutes. What is her unit rate of sit-ups per minute? Show this in 2 different ways.

SLIDE-BASED TASKS

These links are HCPSS created instructional tasks. These tasks are provided in Google slides. These tasks should be used for inspiration and resources, but instruction should start with students having the opportunity to engage with the math first (often involving physical and/or visual models) followed by discussion and explicit instruction to ensure student understanding.

Assessment

Learning Targets

rubric

  • Describe unit rate.
  • Identify common or prevalent real-world unit rates and explain what those rates determine.
  • Use unit rates to solve problems.

Learning targets identify what students should be able to do. This rubric can be applied to tasks and observations for assessment and/or grading.
