Sample Handwriting Lesson-2
Please refer to the Developmentally Appropriate Handwriting Instruction (Zaner-Bloser Pacing Guide) in The Early Childhood Handwriting Resource Guide for the recommended sequence for teaching skills and manuscript letters.
Whole Group Lesson
Frequency
Once a week.
Objective
The student will learn to correctly form a letter.
Possible Materials
- document camera;
- large and small white boards and dry erase markers;
- chalk board and chalk;
- laminated construction paper; and/or,
- ball of clay, wikki sticks, gel bags.
Procedure
- 3 minutes: model how to make the letter using a document camera, whiteboard, or chalkboard. Be sure to make some correctly and some incorrectly. Ask the student to give a thumbs up or down to provide feedback on modeled letters.
- 2 minutes: students make the letter in the air, on the carpet, on their knee, and on their palm. Monitor students for correct letter formation.
- 5 minutes: give each student a piece of laminated construction paper and a tool to form the letter. Some suggestions for tools include: a ball of clay or playdough, Wikki Stixs, gel bags, and dry erase markers. Direct students to form the letter with the material provided. After they form the letter, have them trace it with their finger. Monitor students for correct letter formation and directionality (top to bottom, left to right).
Small group lesson
Lesson Frequency
Three times a week.
Objective
The student will learn to correctly form a letter.
Possible Materials
- small white board and dry erase markers;
- chalkboard and chalk;
- unlined and lined paper;
- pencils; and, stickers
Procedure
- 1 minute: model how to make the letter.
- 2 minutes: students make the letter in the air, on their palm, and on the desk. Monitor students for correct letter formation.
- 3 minutes: students form letters on a small whiteboard, chalkboard, or unlined paper. Students will circle their best letter.
- 4 minutes: students will letters on lined paper (with middle-dotted line) approximately 3-5 times. Students will put a sticker above their best letter.
- NOTE: the goal is quality not quantity of letters.
