National History Day for Community and Students
Welcome
This page is designed for students, parents, and teachers to support our Howard County District History Day Competition. HCPSS has supported History Day for many years, and established our own countywide competition 20 years ago. In this time, our district competition has hosted as many as 350 students annually from our public middle and high schools, as well as county students from home school and private schools. During the 2021-22 school year, over 3,200 students participated in History Day at the school level and eighteen students were showcased at the national competition.
Why National History Day?
National History Day (Links to an external site.) (NHD) is an extended academic program focused on historical research, interpretation and creative expression for 6th to 12th grade students. An annual theme will guide students’ research. By participating in NHD, students become writers, filmmakers, web designers, playwrights and artists as they create unique contemporary expressions of history. The experience culminates in a series of contests at the school, county and state levels and an annual national competition in June.
An independent study from 2011 found that participation in the National History Day Contest benefits students far beyond the competition. National History Day not only transports classrooms back in time during the school year, it transforms young minds forever.
