Scareware

Scareware Information

Scareware is a form of malware that attempts to manipulate you into buying malicious antivirus software, running malicious programs, or allowing the attacker to have remote access to your computer. Attackers use disruptive browser popups to create the perception that your computer is infected with a virus and you must follow their instructions to correct the problem. When purchasing the malicious software users provide the attacker with sensitive information such as account credentials or credit card information. If remote access is granted, the attacker can install malicious software or access personal files.

General Information

On HCPSS computers, scareware typically presents in the form of internet browser pop-ups, but occasionally can be a result of the installation of a browser add-on or extension.

The pop-up messages inform users that the computer is infected with a fictional virus. The scareware may prevent the user from closing the window/browser application. Occasionally, an audio message may play to make the threat of a virus infection seem more credible. These messages typically instruct the user to call a specific number for technology support.

What should I do if I am a victim of scareware?

  • If you are victim of scareware, never call the phone number presented, allow remote access by the attacker to your computer or provide sensitive information, such as account credentials or credit card numbers.
  • The simplest resolution for scareware events is to force quit the browser application and relaunch.
    • Scareware pop-up windows generally are the result of clicking on a malicious link on a web page.
  • If scareware pop-up windows continue to impact the use of the computer tell a teacher so that the issue can be reported to the Information Technology Department.
    • A browser plug-in may be the cause of the issue, and a support specialist can help remove the malicious plug-in.
