Who Am I-2
Grade 1 Mathematics
Routine - Who Am I?
Standards: 2.MD.6, 3.NF.2, 3.NF.3d, Mathematical Practice #1, 2, and 6
Sketch or place a ticked number line on the board, labeling the two endpoints. After initial introduction, begin to vary the starting point so that students move beyond only seeing zero or one as the start of a number line. Mark a point with a “?” that corresponds to your secret number (be precise with the position). As students try to guess your secret number, place and label a mark on the number line with their guesses. With discussion, continue marking each guess to give students a point of reference until your secret number is discovered. The classroom conversation should include points about relative magnitude of numbers. Relative magnitude refers to the size relationship one number has with another- is it much larger/greater, much smaller/less, close, or about the same? This routine should start with whole numbers in 1st and 2nd grade. Using more than 3 digits and the use of fractions or decimals is more appropriate for 3rd-5th grade.
Additional Suggestions:
- Engage students in assisting with the placement of guesses on the number line.
- Is your number more or less than the last number given? How much more/less?
- Which two tens does the number fall between?
- Is there a benchmark we can add to our number line to help guide our guesses?
- What is an example of a number that could NOT be the mystery number? Why?
- After students identify the mystery number, change the beginning or end point and ask students if the placement of the mystery number will change? Explain.
