The Canvas notification settings screen

1.  Click on the Account icon.

2.  Click on the "Notifications" link.

1.   Notify Immediately - Sends an email when activity occurs 

2.   Daily Summary - Daily digest of all notifications set to this frequency (daily email is sent around 6pm)

3.   Weekly Summary - Weekly email of all notifications set to this frequency (sent on Saturdays)

4.   Notification Off - No email sent when this activity occurs

 

 Recommended Preferences

Canvas notifications can quickly fill your Inbox. Below are the recommended Canvas notification settings to ensure you receive timely communications from your child's teachers, while reducing large quantities of automated emails. Items not listed are either not recommended or do not go out to parent accounts. You may adjust your preferences at any time.

Changing Your Settings and Profile Picture

User Settings

 1) Edit Settings

Editing Display Name

Your full name and display name will match the contact info you have on file. It is the name teachers will see in their communications with you.

 

 2) Ways to Contact

Email Communication

 

Email Address IconsA.  Your default email address will be designated with a star icon next to email address (see below).  This will be the email address you are using to log in to Canvas. The blue font designates the email address as being registered. The gray font means that the email address still needs to be confirmed.  To delete an email address, click on the trash can icon .

B.  You may include more than one email address.  However, only one email address will be considered the default email address. To add another email address, click the +Add Email Address link

Canvas Student - Confirm Email Address-1.pngC.  After adding an email address, you will be prompted to confirm your email address.  If the message does not appear in your personal email in-box, re-send the confirmation message and check your spam box.

Canvas Student - Confirmation Email.pngD.  In your personal email account, you will receive a message from Instructure Canvas (notifications@instructure.com).  The message will ask you to confirm your email address.  Click on the text that says, "Click here to confirm this registration."  Important: When confirming your email address through your personal email, you will also need to be signed into Canvas at the same time.

As of May 2020, Canvas SMS notification subscriptions are limited to to only Announcements and Grade notifications. To enable additional mobile notifications, install the the Canvas Parent App on your mobile device and configure push notification preferences on the Notifications page.

 

A.  After entering your 10 digit mobile device number, select your mobile carrier.  The SMS Email will auto-fill as you enter the first two fields.  Once you have entered your mobile device number and have selected your carrier, click on "Register SMS." Canvas Student - SMS-1.png

C.  Check your mobile device for a text message from Instructure Canvas.  Enter the four-character confirmation code into the message box.

D.  As with your email address, you may also delete a registered mobile device number as well at any time by clicking on the trash can icon Canvas Student - Trash Can Icon-1.png.

 3) Profile Picture

Canvas Student - Select Picture.pngNote: The "Take a Picture"option is not available while using Safari or Internet Explorer.  Your profile picture does not necessarily need to be a self-portrait. It could also be a picture of nature or a picture of an object.

Notification Video

Watch the video below for information on how to set your notification preferences.  Although Twitter is showcased in the video, do not  establish Twitter as an approved Web Service.  Twitter is not an approved third-party service for student use.  Notifications for students should be established through email and/or phone.  Students who use email notifications must meet the Terms of Service for the email provider.
