Viewing Grades
HCPSS grade reporting policies vary across grade level. Refer to the appropriate section below for the age of your child.
Grades: K - 2
Students in PreK - 2 are graded using the letters M (meets expectations), P (making progress towards expectations), and L (limited/no progress towards expectations). Refer to Report Card Information for more detailed information on these changes. Note that the Canvas gradebook is not used for PreK.
In each subject, assignments will be grouped under grading categories that align with the measurement topics on your child's report card. For example, in Language Arts, 1st grade report cards have the measurement topic "demonstrates reading comprehension" while 1st grade Canvas course has a corresponding grading category called "Reading Comprehension". Teachers will use your child's overall scores in the Reading Comprehension category to determine their report card entry for "demonstrates reading comprehension".
In Canvas, you can review your child's current progress towards these standards:
- Open Canvas and select your K - 2 child from the drop down menu.
- Open one of the subject cards on the home screen.
- Select the Grades tab.
- You will see a list of current assignments, the grading category, and the grade M, P, or L if the assignment has been graded. Ungraded assignments will show a dash and will update as teachers enter scores.
Grades: 3 - 5
In each subject, assignments will be grouped under grading categories that align with the measurement topics on your child's report card. For example, in 3rd grade Language Arts, the Canvas course has a grading category called "Reading Comprehension" which corresponds to the report card measurement topic, "demonstrates reading comprehension". Teachers will use your child's scores in the Reading Comprehension category to determine their report card entry for "demonstrates reading comprehension". Refer to Report Card Information for more detailed information about elementary report cards.
