Talk A Mile A Minute
Grade 3 Mathematics
Routine - Talk a Mile a Minute
Mathematical Practice #6 - Attend to Precision
Purpose: Building Math Vocabulary & Communicating Mathematical Ideas
In this routine, adapted from Dr. Janet Caldwell from Rowan University, students practice their skills with communicating and interpreting math vocabulary or ideas in an engaging way. The teacher projects a list of math vocabulary words/numbers/etc using the chalkboard, chart paper or LCD projector. Students are strategically placed with a partner to complete this routine.
- Partner 1 sits facing the screen
- Partner 2 sits with their back to the screen
- Partner 1 gives clues without using any part of the word/number to elicit the projected idea
- Partner 1 moves to each new word/number after partner 2 has correctly guessed the preceding word/number until all have been correctly guessed.
- After groups are finished, conduct a whole class discussion about the clues that students used/gave.
Roles can be switched for another round.
Choose math vocabulary or ideas that are appropriate for your students.
