Learning ActivitIES

Asynchronous Activities for Week of September 21

Learning Activity options have been developed for asynchronous assignments. You may choose to use these options and/or develop your own, based on the needs of your class. Selections should be cut and pasted onto your Weekly page prior to publishing.

This week, you will sort by sound, count in order, and use your senses to describe things in your house. Pick a different activity to do every day.

  • Letter Detective: Read the poem Humpty Dumpty Links to an external site.. Look at each line of the poem carefully. Use a pencil, crayon, or marker to circle the letter Mm. Count the number of times you circled upper or lowercase Mm. The letter Mm makes the sound /m/, like mitten or mouse. Think of some other words that start with /m/. Practice writing upper- and lowercase Mm.
  • Comparing Lengths: Pick one of your shoes to use for this activity. Find three objects around your house that are shorter than your shoe. Next, find three objects around your house that are longer than your shoe. Put the items in order by size. Which item is the longest? Which item is the shortest? Try the activity again with a family member’s shoe.
    • Alternative adaptation: Select one object and compare it to your shoe. Is the object or shoe longer?
  • Humpty Dumpty Puzzle: Find an empty cereal box or any empty box you have in your home. Have an adult cut the box into an oval shape. Next, cut up the box into multiple pieces to create a puzzle. Mix up the pieces, then put the puzzle back together again.
  • Creative Illustrator (Fine Arts): Let’s illustrate the poem, Humpty Dumpty Links to an external site.! Below or around words of the poem, use crayons, pencils, watercolor, or other materials to show details from the poem. Don’t forget to show Humpty Dumpty on the wall and Humpty’s big fall! Add the poem Humpty Dumpty to your poetry journal!
    • Alternative adaptation: Create a picture of Humpty Dumpty. Work on creating a face by drawing a circle, two eyes and a mouth.
  • Penny Toss: Gather 5 pennies. Stand on one side of a room and gently toss each penny one at a time. Sort the pennies into two groups (Heads or Tails). Then, state how many pennies landed on heads and how many landed on tails (For example, 3 heads and 2 tails). Count to see how many pennies you have all together. Try it again. Did the pennies land the same way? What was different? What was the same? Try again with 2, 3, and 4 pennies,
    • Alternative adaptation: Gather 5 pennies and bowl. Gently toss the pennies and try to get them in the bowl. How many landed in the bowl? How many did not?
