Unit Overview
In the Empowered Learner unit students will develop the skills and attitudes necessary to become active users of technology. They will understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations and be able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies.

Cornerstone Task

Teaching Pre-K Technology
- With Pre-Kindergarten lessons, the student is exposed to various computer skills through teacher modeling and guided instruction.

- As the students are watching the video, you can open today's Wixie assignment on the Chromebooks. You can do this by accessing the page in Canvas, or by sending the link through Lightspeed.
- Ask students:
- What emotion are you feeling today?
- Can you name some other emotions?

Lesson
- Tell students that today they are going to learn how to take pictures using the camera in Wixie.
- Tell students that pictures are images.
- Use the Taking Pictures Teacher Demonstration
Links to an external site. - Wixie Project to demonstrate for students how to take a photo and add that photo to their Wixie project. Review the three steps to take a photo.
- Review the descriptions in the four boxes. Select which box you will take a picture for first.
- Select the Image icon.
- Select the Camera icon.
- Get ready to take your photo.
- Select Add, pose for your picture while the camera counts down from 3.
- If the student does not like the picture they added, remind them that they can select the image, and then click the red "x" button to delete the picture.
- Select and drag the photo to the correct box.
- Repeat with the other three boxes.
- Remind the students that you have to select the sticker before they can move it.
- Tell students that now they will be capturing their own emotions in Wixie.

- You may need to walk around and click "allow" the first time students attempt taking a picture in Wixie, otherwise they will get a black screen when they try to access the camera.
- Read the directions together as a class.
- Students will select the talkie to hear directions read aloud.
- Students will then take a picture of each emotion and drag it to the correct frame.
- Allow students time to complete the assignment and turn in their work to be assessed using the SBIR Rubric for Technology Skills.
Observational:
- Walk around the classroom and assess students ability to understand how to insert multimedia by taking pictures in Wixie using the web camera as M, P, L on the SBIR Rubric.

Intentional Supports For Access and Opportunity for Multilingual Learners
Native Language Supports
At the beginning of the year and with each newly arriving Multilingual Learners (MLs):
- Connect with the ESOL Teacher/s to obtain and discuss students’ English proficiency levels.
- Determine with ESOL Teacher if individual students would benefit from native language support (reading/ listening to directions on Canvas) and obtain a list of students’ home languages from Synergy (grades 3-5 may benefit from reading option; K-5 may benefit from listening option)
- Arrange to show students how to set a Canvas page to their native language.
- Allow student to use Immersive Reader Links to an external site. in any digital tool, if needed. Immersive Reader allows students to listen to or read information in their native language.
- Ensure this feature is active when students are reading/listening when using Canvas.
Throughout the year:
- Review native language support periodically and determine if students need or prefer to activate it (check with ESOL Teacher and students)
