Overview

Today I will learn how to create my project in Scratch Jr. and add backgrounds and characters.

Step 1.

  Directions: Now that you have planned your dream, follow your teachers directions to share your plan briefly with a partner.

  • What characters did you select?
  • What backgrounds did you select?
  • What other elements will you need to include in your dream?

Lesson

Today we are going to start coding our dream sequence in Scratch Jr.

STEP 2.

  Directions: Follow your teachers directions to review your Planning My Dream Printable Links to an external site. from last class and select the background for where you would be if you were dreaming.

STEP 3.

  Directions: Follow along with your teacher to complete the setup of your Dream. The tabs below can be used to help you with each step. 

 

Directions: The directions below will help you to create your Scratch Jr project and save it with the correct project name.

  • Open the Scratch Jr. app on your Chromebook
    • Scratch Jr. Icon
  • Select Create a New Project

  • Select the Yellow area in the upper right corner.

  • Name your project "Dream FirstName" then select the Blue Check Mark in the upper right corner to save your project.

  • You can now move on to adding your pages and setting your backgrounds.

Directions: The directions below will help you to add your pages to your project and set your backgrounds based on your plan.

  • With your Dream Scratch Jr. project open, Selecting the blue plus sign on the right side of the window to add two additional pages to your project.

  • Select Page 2 on the right side of the window, then select the background icon in the top toolbar.  Select your background for your dream from your Planning My Dream Printable, then select the paintbrush to make any modifications. When you are done select the blue check mark to save your changes and your background.

  • Pages 1 and 3 will be where you are dreaming and will have the same background.  Follow the same directions above to add your background to pages 1 and 3. Remember your can select the paintbrush to modify your background for the bedroom scene. Previous edits to background will be options at the top of the add backgrounds screen. When you are done you should have three pages with a background on each.

  • Below is an example of what your project may look like at this point.

  • You can now move on to adding your characters/sprites to your pages.

Directions: The directions below will help you to add characters to your pages based on your plan.

  • With your Dream Scratch Jr. project open, Select page 1, press and hold on the cat character on the left side of the window and select the red x that appears to remove the cat character.

  • Select the blue plus sign on the left side of the window, then select the character that represents you from your Planning My Dream Printable, then select the paintbrush to make any modifications. When you are done select the blue check mark to save your changes and your character

  • Repeat the directions above for pages 2 and 3 in your project. These pages include both the character that represents you and the character from your dream. Remember previous characters that have been edited will be available at the top of the add characters screen.

STEP 4.

Directions: Before we start to code our dream, take a moment to review your Planning My Dream Printable.  Add any additional items or make any final adjustments to your characters and backgrounds. Below is a sample project.
