Grade 2 Creative Communicator Global Collaborator Cornerstone Task Summary

Grade 2 CC/GC Cornerstone Task Summary

Summary

In this activity students will gather data from an online source. They will interpret the data using a question provided by the teacher, brainstormed by the class or developed independently and decide on a means to display their interpretation. Included in their display will be information about at least one other geographic area where data were collected.

Standards

Creative Communicator

Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital media appropriate to their goals.

Global Collaborator

Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally.

Considerations

  • Students should be familiar with the choices of tools to represent their data before the lesson. Students can brainstorm possibilities or the teacher can present options (some possibilities are Wixie, Google Earth, Google Slides, ComicLife, coding software, or other tools). Review with students the advantages and disadvantages of the various tools.
  • If students have learned about graphs they can also be expected to graph the data.
  • For each possible tool review with the students how they will submit through Canvas. They can share a URL, or upload a file or media.
  • Consider sharing the link to the JourneyNorth Links to an external site. website with the classroom teacher in advance so students can input data as part of their 4th Quarter Science unit--Relationships within Habitats.  Share the link with the families of students as well and encourage them to also add their own data to the site.

ResourceS

More information regarding the use of each of the resources can be located in the Cornerstone Task lesson plan.

Alternatively, you can have students gather data in their school or community as part of a citizen science project (see Scistarter https://scistarter.com/ Links to an external site. for many projects)

Access Points to Consider

  • This task can be made more meaningful if the data are part of a larger project--whether it be a science unit or an exercise in data collection about favorite ice cream flavor and compare that with similar data from another school.
  • Provide choices of a limited number of data sets and demonstrate how to access them.
  • In addition giving a limited choice of questions to be addressed will help students. Other students may be able to develop their own questions, especially having seen samples.
  • Showing students how to bookmark pages with relevant data will be helpful for the second lesson.
