Learning Target:
- Students will discuss and establish prior knowledge.
Lesson
Multiple Means of Representation
- Students explore the JourneyNorth Links to an external site. site or another site with similar data (if a different type of site is used, the opening discussion may need to be changed to match the content of the selected website). Explain how the data on the site is collected collaboratively by the public.
- Students can work independently or in pairs.
- Allow students time to select an organism to research on JourneyNorth Links to an external site.
- As a class brainstorm a list of possible questions to explore. Teacher should record questions on a the board or on a collaborative Google Doc.
- The teacher should model how to select a question and/or provide some sample questions as needed.
- Students should choose one question to research about the organism. Encourage students to select questions that allow for students to find the answers efficiently within a short time period.
- All questions should involve an area different from the local area.
- If using JourneyNorth Links to an external site. some appropriate questions are:
- Do robins arrive earlier in the Western US or the Eastern US? (Students can choose two locations in each area to compare)
- Do hummingbirds or robins arrive first in the spring? (Students can compare arrival dates for those two species in two or three locations.)
- Over the past 5 years have robins been arriving at about the same time? (Students can choose two different locations and look at the data over 5 years)
- The question and the amount of data used to answer the question should be adjusted to be appropriate for the students in the group.
Learning Target:
- Students will brainstorm possible questions to research and select one.
ASsessmenT
Multiple Means of Expression
- Identify data that will answer chosen question.
- Provide students with a variety of tools to select from. Allow students to select one to display their data as well as their analysis. Students can use gr2_ccgc_cornerstoneOrganizer Links to an external site. to help them organize their information.
- The data table in the organizer can be adapted to be appropriate to the data the students choose.
Learning Target:
- The student will collect their data and complete an organizer.
