 Teacher Preparation

 

Motivation

Multiple Means of Motivation:

  • Review Cornerstone Overview with students. 
  • Show students DEAR Teacher | Storytime Read Aloud. Links to an external site. (3.57) Invite students to the carpet to allow for movement. 
    • (Turn on Closed Captioning for Video) 
  • Ask students to think about some of the messages that they would like to give to their teacher? What type of messages do you think Bee-Bot might want to deliver?  
    • Provide students with sentence frames on an anchor chart post class discussion.  
  • Allow a few minutes for discussion and sharing.
  • Tell students that over the next few weeks they will be working to create an algorithm to send a message to a teacher using the Bee-Bot robot and the Bee-Bot emulator.

Learning Target:

  • Students will be introduced to the Cornerstone Task.

PREPARING THE LEARNER

Multiple Means of Representation:

  • Ask students to think about the teachers they saw in the video. Can they think of any teachers in their school that they would like to send a message to?  Project the Dear Teacher Brainstorm Lucid Spark Links to an external site. on the board, ask students to name 6 teachers in their school that they could send a message to. List those teachers on Lucid.
  • For each teacher listed ask students to give a sample message to that teacher and record that on the Dear Teacher Brainstorm. Links to an external site.
  • As a class decide on one teacher to send a message to.  
    • Record student choice for reminders.
  • Tell students that we are going to use a Bee-Bot Mask (Costume) to create our message for our teacher.  We want it to be fun and colorful. Students may self-select their message for that teacher or use one of the brainstormed examples.  
    • For students who need to copy a message, whiteboards or sticky notes should be used for assistance.

INTERACTING WITH THE CONCEPT

Learning Target:

  • Students will brainstorm a list of teachers and messages that Bee-Bot can send.

EXTENDING UNDERSTANDING

Multiple Means of Expression:

  • Collect completed Bee-Bot masks from students and assess using the SBIR Rubric as M, P, or L. 
  • Store the completed masks for Day 2 of the Cornerstone.

Learning Target: 

  • Students will select one teacher and create a Bee-Bot Mask with a message for that teacher.

For Day 2 and Day 3 of the Cornerstone Task there are two options for Bee-Bot mats.  Select whether the Alphabet or School Mat will best meet the needs of your students.  Then select the accordion for full lesson plans using that mat.
