Grade 5 Computational Thinker Cornerstone Task Lesson

Motivation
Multiple Means of Motivation:
- Review Cornerstone Overview with students.
- Introduce/Review Key Vocabulary that students may be familiar with.
- Show student My Spinner Story

- Ask students how the timing of the text and movement are important in the story?
- Show students the code and point out the use of Broadcast command to review from previous lessons.

- Students will view a Spinner Story example and review the use of the Broadcast command.

Lesson
Multiple Means of Representation:
- Demonstrate for students how to make a copy of the Cornerstone Story Requirements
Links to an external site. - Google Doc (Links to an external site.). They will use this document throughout the Cornerstone.
- Make a copy
- Rename file
- Share with Tech Teacher
- Review with students the task requirements and the Cornerstone Task Rubric Links to an external site.
- Allow time for students to ask questions as needed. Remind students that each row on the rubric connects to one portion of the Cornerstone Task.
- Tell them that they should refer back to the rubric as they are working.
- Demonstrate for students how to open their Spinner Story Organizer Links to an external site. in Google Drive from the previous lesson.
- Printed copies of Creating New CS First Project Links to an external site.
- Using the directions and the Creating Your Project for the Cornerstone Links to an external site. - Studio Video provided in the SF Module - demonstrate and guide students through accessing CS First and creating a blank project and naming that project Cornerstone Task - FirstName

- Model for students how to use the Cornerstone Story Requirements - Google Doc Links to an external site. Checklist to work through each task.
- Point out the video tutorial accordions that are posted in the SF Module for students to reference as needed.
- If time allows, students begin working through the checklist by adding their sprites and background.
- Printed copies of Saving Work in CS First Links to an external site.

- Review with students the Student Friendly Language for their Spinner Story Links to an external site. before submitting their work.
- Students may have begun to create their story in their Scratch for CS First project using the Cornerstone Story Requirements Links to an external site. - Google Doc.
Learning Target:
- Students will have successfully completed their Spinner Story Organizer that can be used to create their story. Students may have begun working through the Cornerstone Story Requirements.

- Review with students that they will continuing to work on their Spinner Story Cornerstone Task today.
- Demonstrate for students how to get set up for class.
- Opening G-Suite and then opening Cornerstone Requirements and Spinner Story Organizer - Google Docs
- Open CS First and find project from the day before.
- Play their Scratch program from the previous day.

Lesson
Multiple Means of Representation:
- Review all required elements on the Cornerstone Story Requirements Links to an external site. - Google Doc. Remind students that they can use it as a checklist.
- Make sure students understand that their finished story must contain 2 sprites, 1 backdrop, dialogue that is timed appropriately, and sprites that move.
- Remind students that the Scratch Tutorial Cards Links to an external site. can be used for additional programming ideas.
- Review the Scratch: Types of Coding Blocks Links to an external site. to remind students of the coding blocks and how they are organized in Scratch.
- Allow students time to continue work on their Spinner Story with the given requirements.
- Provide students with printed copies of Scratch: Dialogue with Broadcast Blocks Links to an external site. to refer to as they working.
- Provide printed copies of Saving Work in CS First Links to an external site. for students to refer to as needed.

- Encourage students to engage in a discussion about their experiences. Students should discuss:

- challenges

- required support
- Model for students how to expand upon their ideas as a class.
- Some Student may need to jot down notes before recording their responses.

- Students will share and discuss their Spinner Story Scratch project in CS First with a partner.
