Grade 2 CT Cornerstone Task Lesson

Motivation

Multiple Means of Motivation:

  • Review Cornerstone Overview with students. 
  • Show students the Grade 2 Cornerstone Sample Dream Links to an external site. (0:35) - Studio Video.  Consider inviting students to the front carpet to allow for movement.
  • Ask students to think about the dream that they have been coding the last few weeks in Scratch Jr. 
    • Does their dream include similar elements? 
    • Does it follow a similar sequence?
  • Show the video again and pause periodically to point out to students some of the advanced coding blocks in the video.

Learning Target:

  • Students will view a sample Cornerstone Project and review some advanced coding blocks.

Multiple Means of Representation:

  • Review with students the required elements for the Cornerstone Task. 
  • Call on students to share how they have used different elements in their projects so far.  
  • Consider creating or posting a list of the required elements in the classroom for students to refer to.  
  • Allow time for the students to access their projects and check to see which elements that they have included and which elements are still missing.
  • Show students the first 40 seconds of Debugging Links to an external site. - YouTube Video 
  • Ask students to think about the steps that they might go through to debug their project?  
  • List student responses on the board.  Consider creating a 3 step process for students to follow to debug their work.
    • Examine the error symptoms
    • Identify the cause
    • Fix the error
  • Allow time for students to finish their Dream projects in Scratch Jr.

Learning Target:

  • Students will identify any missing elements or errors in their projects.
  • Students will complete the 3 steps to debug any errors that exist.

Assessment

Multiple Means of Expression:

  • Provide directions for accessing the My Dream Cornerstone Task Links to an external site. - Wixie Project through Canvas. 
  • Read the directions for students and review how to record a video to reflect on their work.
  • Direct students to submit their work through Canvas and assess using the SBIR Rubric as M, P, or L.
  • Assess students using the Observational Tool Checklist while circulating throughout the lesson.

Learning Target: 

  • Students will reflect on their work by creating a video in Wixie
