Teacher Considerations
-
Teamwork activities can be challenging for some first grade students. Students at this age can be very “me” focused. Prior to any teamwork activity, review your expectations for team behavior, such as taking turns, listening to each other, speaking kindly, respecting other’s ideas, offering praise and encouragement, etc.

Motivator Seeds: Multiple Means of Engagement
Seed 1
Have student pairs go to the “ Links to an external site.Engineering Games - Tinker Ball. Links to an external site.” Links to an external site. Have students work in pairs to use the materials to move the ball from the top of the screen to the cup. Encourage students to communicate their ideas with their partners before attempting to build the structure. Discuss the importance of listening to your partner when they are sharing their idea and respecting their ideas even if you disagree. Let friends try ideas and offer praise or encouragement if the design does not work. Model how to respond if the ball does not reach the cup; for example, “Great try Amir! The ball almost got in the cup!” Also model how to offer suggestions in a polite, respectful way, such as, “I like your idea about using the ruler. What if we try tilting it a bit more? What do you think?”
Seed 2
Borrow a large piece puzzle from Kindergarten, give out all but a few pieces to the students. Have the students attempt to construct the puzzle. Ask the students what is wrong. Give out the missing pieces. Discuss with the students that just like when a piece is missing from a puzzle, if a student is not participating in an activity, that activity will not be complete.
