Grade 4 Communication and Collaboration: Collaborative Technology Tools (In Development)
Grade 4 Creative Communicator/Global Collaborator
Lesson: Collaborative Technology Tools
A lesson seed collection is a menu of ideas that can be used to build a lesson. To build a lesson, select a Motivator Seed, a Lesson Seed, and a Assessment & Closure Seed. Use the Additional Activities and Resources for additional ideas, and remember to cue videos prior to instruction in order to avoid advertisements.
HCPSS Content Standards
Reading
RI7 Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.
RI9 Integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.
SL1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
SL4 Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience in an organized manner, using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.
SL5 Add audio recordings and visual displays to presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.
L1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
L2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
L3 Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.
Writing
W6 With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting.
W7 Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.
W8 Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; take notes and categorize information, and provide a list of sources.
W9 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
Math
MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6 Attend to precision.
STEM Standards
2. Integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Content.
4. Engage in Inquiry.
5. Engage in Logical Reasoning.
6. Collaborate as a STEM Team.
7. Apply Technology Strategically.
Essential Questions
How can you compare the collaborative technology tools available for a specific purpose?
Outcomes
Collaborate in pairs or groups to develop technology-based presentations or products for content-related topics using digital audio, photos, images, video, or charts (e.g., interact via videoconferencing or blogging with young adult authors, musicians, artists, or scientists to collaborate on a multimedia product with teacher oversight). GAfE?
Vocabulary
- video
- charts
Teacher Considerations
-
Prior to the lesson, ensure that students have some background knowledge with using GAfE and you have a classroom management strategy in place. Consider mini lesson on the revision history or chat window prior to this seed.
-
Review “Responsible Use of Technology Policy Links to an external site.” with students prior to this seed. Make sure students understand that when they are using collaborative documents they need to model positive digital citizenship.
-
Consider taking photos or recording video of your students working collaboratively that can be used in future years.
Motivator Seeds: Multiple Means of Engagement
Seed 1
Brainstorm with students about how they collaborate and work in groups in their classrooms. Have them share examples of times when they have worked in groups on a project that they have shared with their peers or the community when finished. Ensure that students understand that when they work in groups they are all working on the same project simultaneously. Ask students: How might this type of group work look in technology class? For example, we have just completed an Engineering is Elementary unit about Electricity and we want to share our findings with peers and families. Groups of students will be creating a presentation that will be shared electronically. Allow students to understand that working in groups on one computer on one file is not a productive use of time. Have students brainstorm how we can solve this problem and use our time productively. Lead students toward the idea of using Google Apps for Education Links to an external site. and other collaborative tools that allow for multiple students to work simultaneously.
Lesson Seeds: Multiple Means of Representation
Seed 1
- ”Teaching Channel” Google Docs in the Classroom Links to an external site. - this video is of a Links to an external site. high school writing class but the explanation of the power of Google Docs for collaborative writing is appropriate for 4th grade.
Seed 2
- Use Google Documents to collaborate in pairs or small groups to do script writing for multimedia projects using GarageBand or iMovie. (e.g. Famous Marylanders, STEM careers, etc.)
Seed 3
-
Use Google Presentations to collaborate in pairs or small groups to create multimedia presentations on a topic. (e.g., planets, disease prevention, nutrition, etc.)
Seed 4
- Use Google Forms to collect geographic information about a topic (e.g. animal migration patterns, locations described in narrative writing, historical timelines of events, etc.) then use that data to populate a Google Map using “BatchGeo Links to an external site..” Students can take a screenshot of the map to include in multimedia document or presentations on a topic.
Seed 5
- Lessons and guest speakers to connect with other classrooms and professionals.
“Video Conferencing Tools” Links to an external site.
Assessment and Closure Seeds: Multiple Means of Action and Expression
Seed 1
- Chart qualities of collaboration exhibited by students in video. Establish criteria for collaboration as a class. Post in the classroom.
Seed 2
-
Publish final product. Consider publishing in a location that can be shared. (e.g., “Pod-O-Matic Links to an external site.” or uploading to GAfE account)
Seed 3
- Use “Rubistar Links to an external site.” to assess student work.
Seed 4
- Research and prioritize either teacher selected or student selected tools to support a specific purpose.
Seed 5
- Students and Teachers can brainstorm pros and cons of collaborating with others in an online environment.
