Lesson: Comparing and Contrasting Technology Tools for Communication

A lesson seed collection is a menu of ideas that can be used to build a lesson. To build a lesson, select a Motivator Seed, a Lesson Seed, and a Assessment & Closure Seed. Use the Additional Activities and Resources for additional ideas, and remember to cue videos prior to instruction in order to avoid advertisements.

Essential Questions

  • How do I compare and contrast the technology tools available to communicate a specific purpose?

Outcomes

  • Create and edit products in a variety of media environments (e.g., presentations, newsletter, video, annotated calendar) to effectively communicate individual and group curriculum activities, ideas, or results to multiple audiences.

Vocabulary

  • chat
  • instant messaging
  • comments
  • notes
  • wall
  • upload

Teacher Considerations

  • Remember to check Terms of Service and get parental permission where required for online digital tools, especially those where you have to create student accounts.
  •  Consider establishing “Edmodo Links to an external site.” as an online learning community for your technology classes at this grade level allowing students to practice responsible digital citizenship behaviors in their own classroom and allow them a safe communication platform to share their findings.
  • Consider student experience with Canvas discussions.
  • Set up a Canvas discussion, “Edmodo Links to an external site.” group, “Weebly Links to an external site.” blog, or other similar online tool that students can access outside of class. Encourage them to seek out other communication and collaboration tools that others might be interested in using for projects. Establish a place for them to review these tools for their peers, similar to writing a book review such as Canvas.

Motivator Seeds: Multiple Means of Engagement

Consider using Google Drawing to create a list of online tools (“Facebook Links to an external site.,” “Twitter Links to an external site.,” “Edmodo Links to an external site.,” Google, YouTube Links to an external site.,” email, etc.) that they use or that they know of from friends, parents, or their own experiences. Create individual copies of the Google Drawing. Allow pairs or small groups to sort and organize like tools together. Share organization as a class. Discuss with students that there are many tools online and offline that accomplish the same purpose. Which tool you select to use will be determined by the project you are working on.
