Grade 4 Communication and Collaboration: Face to Face Vs. Online Teams (In Development)

Grade 4 Communication and Collaboration

Lesson: Face to Face vs. Online Teams

A lesson seed collection is a menu of ideas that can be used to build a lesson. To build a lesson, select a Motivator Seed, a Lesson Seed, and a Assessment & Closure Seed. Use the Additional Activities and Resources for additional ideas, and remember to cue videos prior to instruction in order to avoid advertisements.

HCPSS Content Standards

Reading

RI7 Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.
RI9 Integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.
SL1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
SL4 Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience in an organized manner, using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.
SL5 Add audio recordings and visual displays to presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.
L1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
L2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
L3 Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.

 Writing

W6 With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting.
W7 Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.
W8 Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; take notes and categorize information, and provide a list of sources.
W9 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

Math

MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6 Attend to precision.

STEM Standards

2. Integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Content.
4. Engage in Inquiry.
5. Engage in Logical Reasoning.
6. Collaborate as a STEM Team.
7. Apply Technology Strategically.

Essential Questions

  • How would working with a team face to face differ then working with a team online?

Outcomes

  • Working in pairs or small groups with assigned roles, use digital tools to explore specific subject-related concepts or content and present problem solutions or create original works using appropriate tools (e.g., animation and drawing software, visual data tools, graphic organizers, simulation development tools, programming languages, video camera, editing software, music software).

Vocabulary

  • programming
  • language

Teacher Considerations

  • Consider establishing “Canvas Links to an external site.” as an online learning community for your technology classes at this grade level, allowing students to practice responsible digital citizenship behaviors in their own classroom prior to engaging in a global collaboration project.
  •  Consider doing prior lessons with Scratch Links to an external site. and SketchUp so that students can have experience prior to these lessons.

Motivator Seeds: Multiple Means of Engagement

Show students the “YouTube” Links to an external site.Kingda Ka Rollercoaster Time Lapsed Video Links to an external site.. Have a class discussion and brainstorm with students the number of people that are needed to work together to imagine, design, plan, and create a roller coaster. Allow students to understand that any technology (refer to EiE Definition) created requires many people of different abilities and expertise to work together collaboratively across many mediums.

icon-seed-50px.jpgSeed 2

Have students brainstorm problems that are relevant to them. Consider issues in your school or with technology in general. (For example, in order to properly protect our technology we have to put them in bulky cases. How can we design an iPad case that will properly protect without being so bulky?) Ask students to identify the different people that would be involved in the design and creation of this case: researcher, engineer, designer, fabricator, etc. Challenge students to think of ways that these people would all work together to solve this problem and create this product. Would they have meetings face to face? Would they meet online? Would they work independently? Would they work collaboratively?

Assessment and Closure Seeds: Multiple Means of Action and Expression

icon-seed-50px.jpgSeed 1

Students can work together in groups to create an online game using Scratch (e.g., simple circuits).

icon-seed-50px.jpgSeed 2

Have students work in face to face or online teams to design, build, and test their own circuits.

icon-seed-50px.jpgSeed 3

Students can work together to design and create a 3D model using Sketch Up (e.g. animal shelters, geometric shapes).

icon-seed-50px.jpgSeed 4

Have students use Google Drawings or another brainstorming tool to compare and contrast the pros and cons of working face to face and working online.

icon-seed-50px.jpgSeed 5

Have students work individually or in small teams to create animations that solve a real world problem.

icon-seed-50px.jpgSeed 6

Compare and contrast the EDP process with other problem solving processes to help solve real world issues.
