  • Use an online map, such as Google Maps Links to an external site.” or “Yahoo Maps Links to an external site., or a traditional map. Encourage students to share with small groups different places they have visited in the world. Compare and contrast those different places. Seek out any students who have gone to school in other states/countries to share with the whole group how their community and/or their school may have been the same and different to schools in Howard County.

  • Ask students if they have ever communicated with someone that lived in another state/country (i.e., pen pal). Lead the students toward discussing different ways that you can communicate using technology with others who aren’t available face to face. Consider creating a class list of online tools for communication and collaboration.

  • Share with class a global communication project that you will be participating in. (Consider selecting one that will happen over the length of a quarter or a semester so that students can see the long term value of communicating and collaborating globally) Ask students to brainstorm collaborative tools that can be used to meet the needs of the project and which tool may work best.
