Grade 5 Communication and Collaboration

Lesson: Team Building

A lesson seed collection is a menu of ideas that can be used to build a lesson. To build a lesson, select a Motivator Seed, a Lesson Seed, and a Assessment & Closure Seed. Use the Additional Activities and Resources for additional ideas, and remember to cue videos prior to instruction in order to avoid advertisements.

Working in pairs or small groups with assigned roles, use digital tools to explore specific subject-related concepts or content and present problem solutions or create original works using appropriate tools (e.g., animation and drawing software, visual data tools, graphic organizers, simulation development tools, programming languages, video camera, editing software, music software).

Motivator Seeds: Multiple Means of Engagement

Seed 1

Have students brainstorm why a favorite sports team is so successful (qualities of the team and its members).

Seed 2

Have students participate in a group ice breaker activity Links to an external site.. Afterwards have students debrief about how and why they were successful or unsuccessful with the task. List the different attributes the teams had in Inspiration or another online mindmapping tool like “Mindmeister Links to an external site.” or “Bubbl.us Links to an external site.”.

Seed 3

Use the Pixar animated short called For the Birds Links to an external site. to get a discussion started about accepting different people and viewpoints on a team, the consequences of following one person’s idea hastily instead of a collective well-thought out agreement, avoiding smaller groups within a bigger group, etc.

Lesson Seeds: Multiple Means of Representation

Seed 1

“Benetonplay! Flipbook! Links to an external site.” - Animation website that allows students to create 100 frames. Use to create an animation of the water cycle or the events leading up to the war for independence. Export the completed animation and embed it into a webpage, wiki, or blog.

Seed 2

“Mural.ly Links to an external site.” - Create a mural for visual collaboration. You can embed text, images, sound, and video. As a free user, you can have 3 active murals and send the link to unlimited collaborators.
Use “Mural.ly Links to an external site.” or “Scribble Maps Links to an external site.” at the beginning of the year to show places students have visited over the summer.
Use “Mural.ly Links to an external site.” to share researched information about a topic (e.g. historical figures, countries, etc.)

Seed 3

Have students write book reviews. Students can publish the reviews on “BiblioNasium Links to an external site.” for other users to read

Seed 4

“PBS Learning Media” What is a Robot? Links to an external site. - Students could use Frames 5, Pixie, or Google Drawing Links to an external site. to use the EDP to design and create a robot with a specific purpose in small groups. Or, if resources are available, students can create real robots and photograph or videotape the robots in action and insert them into a Google Presentation. Students can collaborate on the Google Presentation.

“PBS Learning Media” Recycling and Composting Links to an external site. - (ties in with renewable and nonrenewable resources)

While completing this lesson, students can Skype with an artist who makes art with recycled materials. Students can design a new recycling or composting program for the school.

Use Scratch to create a digital story or a content-related game.

“Buck Institute” Project Based Learning Links to an external site. - On this website are tools that can be used to develop a project- based learning activity or unit. You can use this site to search for examples of lessons for classroom use.
