The Ten Wand is a visual way for students to understand the number ten which is so important since we work in a base 10 arithmetic system.  It reinforces ways to compose and decompose ten and helps students understand that numbers can be broken apart into smaller quantities. It also reinforces the properties of numbers. Fluency with combinations of ten help students use efficient strategies in computation later on.

The bulk of the routine as presented in this video is from the book Number Sense Routines by Jessica Shumway, however contributions were also made from activity 2-1 (Snap-It) from Kathy Richardson’s Developing Number Concepts, Book 2.

DIRECTIONS:

As students generate pairs that make 10 during this routine, you may also want to ask them to generate equations that would match each example.  For example, based on the video below, students might generate:

2 + 8 = 10

10 = 7 + 3

5 + 5 = 10

4 + 6 = 10
