Grade 5 GT Geometry

7.G.6

About the Math

Full Standard

Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume. Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.

Learning Targets (I can)

  • Determine the area of two - dimensional figures.
  • Compare and contrast surface area and volume.
  • Determine the surface area of three - dimensional figures.
  • Determine the volume of three - dimensional figures.
  • Solve real - world problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

About the Math

Knowledge of calculating area, volume, and surface area in extended when applied to the context of a real world problem or scenario. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures are explored and polygons are decomposed into triangles and rectangles in order to find area. determine the accurate formula needed to determine the measurements being explored in the real world scenario. Essential vocabulary for this standard includes: length, width, base, height, area, surface area, volume, polygon, right prism, cube, quadrilateral, triangle, two-dimensional (2D), three-dimensional (3D), triangles, polygon. Instructional Tasks

TASKS

These tasks can be used with small group or whole group instruction.

  • Make a birdhouse: What three-dimensional figures make up the birdhouse? What methods could you use to find the surface area of the birdhouse? How could you find the volume of the birdhouse?
  • Provide students with grains of rice, a pyramid, and a prism to work to  compare the volume of each.

SLIDE-BASED TASKS

These links are HCPSS created instructional tasks. These tasks are provided in Google slides. These tasks should be used for inspiration and resources, but instruction should start with students having the opportunity to engage with the math first (often involving physical and/or visual models) followed by discussion and explicit instruction to ensure student understanding.

Additional Tasks
