Grade 5 G/T Mathematics
Closure - Name That Practice (SMPs)

Standards for Mathematical Practices: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

This closure activity allows students to reflect on what standards for mathematical practices they used during the class period.  In the video, you may notice that the teacher had the students create a poster for each of the mathematical practices using their own language and examples prior to teaching this closure activity to the students.  This is an important step to ensure the students understand each of the standards for mathematical practices.  The teacher gives the students a few quiet moments to personally reflect on which practice they used during the day’s lesson and how they could explain to a classmate.  Once the students have had time to reflect, they are directed to share with a partner.  The teacher allows students to share and joins in on some of the conversations.  The class is then brought back together and several students are called on to share the practice, what activity they used it for, and how they can justify the practice being used.

 Questions you could ask:

1. Is there another practice that you needed in order to work on that activity?
2. Is there anyone else that identified with the same practice, but has a different
example of how it was used?
3. Is there a practice you feel you would like to work with more? Why?
4. Would anyone like to defend the example shared and why it supports the identified practice?
