Understanding the Canvas Gradebook
Standards Based Instruction and Reporting (SBIR) is an equity-based instruction and grading practice grounded in consistent learning goals explicitly aligned to the grade-level curriculum. Measurement Topics are the sections listed on the report card in each content/subject area. They are defined as “reporting categories of related curriculum standards.” All standards in each content/subject area have been grouped with related standards and “rolled up” into a measurement topic.
The below overview provides information about the Canvas Gradebook for both intermediate (grades 3-5) and primary (grades K-2) levels. For step-by-step instructions on how to access the Canvas Gradebook, please refer to the HCPSS Parent Viewing Grades Canvas page.
INTERMEDIATE GRADES (3-5):
Teachers report grades within measurement topics, not a single overall grade, to communicate how students perform in related standards. In the example below, a student may have a "79% overall" and parents would have historically seen an ‘C' on the report card. However, giving a single overall grade does not communicate specific information about their child’s progress across the grade-level standards. In the sample Canvas Gradebook below, this student's strongest measurement topic is Reading Foundational Skills (83%), while this student may benefit from additional practice in the measurement topic Language Conventions (73%). By receiving a grade based on evidence in each measurement topic (group of specific standards), a more detailed picture of a student’s strengths and areas for improvement will be communicated.
The image below shows a portion of the student/parent grade view in the gradebook. The red rectangle shows the grades for each assignment group/measurement topic. The purple rectangle shows the assignment group/measurement topic to which each assignment is linked. In this example, the scores on the three reading skills assignments were used to calculate the Reading Foundational Skills grade (83.33%) by dividing the total number of points earned (8+8+9 = 25) on the three assignments by the total number of points possible for the three assignments (10+10+10=30).
