Grade 2 Digital Citizen Cornerstone Task Lesson

 Teacher Preparation

  • Import Student Facing Module from Commons.
  • Review yellow highlighted content in the SF Module.  Create/Update content to meet the needs of your students.
  • Consider having copies of Cornerstone Task Teacher Rubric Links to an external site. - Google Doc available for students to refer to during the project so that they are aware of the requirements of the project.
  • Cornerstone Research Organizer - Download a copy of the linked Google Drive Document below and upload to your own Google Drive.  Then in submission type for the assignment select External Tool and Find > Google Assignments LTI.  Select your copy of the "Cornerstone Research Organizer" Links to an external site. - Google Doc. Make sure that the point value and due date on the Google Assignment match the point value and due date in Canvas.
  • Select your Assessment Measure: Students will complete their Cornerstone Research Organizer using a Google Doc.
    • Download a copy of the linked Google Drive Document below and upload to your own Google Drive.

MOTIVATION

Multiple Means of Motivation

  • Review with students the Lesson Overview.
  • Review with students that Internet makes it easier for people to communicate quickly. 
  • Explain that one of the easiest ways to share information is using email.

Learning Target:

  • Students will discuss how and why email is used.

LESSON

Multiple Means of Representation

  • Review with students the format and parts of a friendly letter that they learned about in English/Language Arts class.
  • Then review the parts of an email.
  • Remind students that information can be placed in the body of the email or as an attachment. Attachments can be a wide variety of formats--such as audio recordings, videos, images, etc.
  • Compare and contrast the two forms of writing.
  • Explain to the students that they will compose an email that provides at least two facts about their topic.
  • Review the Cornerstone Task Teacher Rubric Links to an external site. - Google Doc with students so that they understand the expectations of this project.
  • Guide students to begin their research about the topic Digital Citizenship by going over the Cornerstone Research Organizer Links to an external site. - Google Doc.
  • Demonstrate and model for students how to complete it, including citation information. Review with students how to paraphrase information.
  • Consider Provide sentence stems for phrases which they are most likely to use.
  • Show students the website Pebble Go and demonstrate how to navigate the site.
  • Explain to students that they will use Pebble Go resources to find two or three interesting facts about the topic Digital Citizenship.
  • Review with students key features of reputable websites and that they should never share personal information on the internet without a parent/guardian/teachers permission (even if a website requests it).
  • Provide time for students to begin to research and complete their organizer.

Learning Target:

  • Students will review criteria for reputable websites.
  • Students will work to capture important facts, paraphrase important facts. and include citations.

  • Students will paraphrase information found online.

 Teacher Preparation

  • Review yellow highlighted content in the SF Module.  Create/Update content to meet the needs of your students.
  • Determine if you will allow students to self-select the platform that they will use to create their email or if only one option will be provided. 
    • Have a Class Roster available to record students choices for the project they are going to create.
  • Provide the Cornerstone Parts of an Email Template Links to an external site. - PDF DocumentLinks to an external site. for the students, consider printing it as a poster or displaying it in your classroom or on the board.
  • Select your Assessment Measure: Students will compose an email using Wixie OR Google Slides AND a Student Reflection Rubric.
    • If using the Google Slides Email option - Download a copy of the linked Google Drive Document below and upload to your own Google Drive.  Then in submission type for the assignment select External Tool and Find > Google Assignments LTI.  Select your copy of the "Cornerstone Google Slides Email Template" Links to an external site. - Google Slides. Make sure that the point value and due date on the Google Assignment match the point value and due date in Canvas.
    • Download a copy of the linked Google Drive Document below and upload to your own Google Drive.

MOTIVATION

  • Review the previous two days of class where students have been working on their research.
  • Have student review responses on the Cornerstone Task Organizer Links to an external site. and confirm that they have at least two facts, they have put them in their own words, and they have citations for their online resources.
  • Tell students that they will use what they have learned about writing an email to write an email to help their teacher or a friend understand how to be a good digital citizen.

Learning Target:

  • Students will reflect on how to use their research about digital citizenship for this project

LESSON

Learning Target:

  • Students will work on their email in Wixie or in Google Slides
  • Students will include all of the required elements of an email.

ASSESSMENT
