Teacher Considerations

Motivator Seeds: Multiple Means of Engagement

View and discuss the video about language and communication from the resource table.

Discuss with students why humans communicate. Now  identify different reasons people communicate, such as to make plans, to learn new information, to express wants and needs, to help someone, to share your feelings, etc... Compare and contrast reasons for using different technology tools for communication.

This is an opportunity to make a connection to the first quarter science topic animal communication. Students learn that animal communication allows for survival of offspring.  Students also learn reasons animals communicate, such as to alert others of danger, to get food, etc...

Discuss how people can work together on a project and not be in the same room. Use a globe or Google Earth to show two or more locations that are far apart. Ask students to name a company that they think would be found all over the world. Possible answers - Apple, McDonalds, Disney. Ask students how these people could work together. Possible answers - talk on the phone, send email, FaceTime, Skype. Explain that there are collaborative tools that people can use to work together when they are not in the same room. In order to help students understand this concept, give students names of countries or states. Have the students pretend that they are there and that they are sitting at a computer in that place. Use Google Earth or a globe to assist students in understanding “their location”. Some students may have an easier time understanding this concept if they are sitting outside the actual classroom.

Students using the stationary lab will not be able to do this. Have the students in their “locations” access a student safe chatting space, such as “Weebly Education Sites Links to an external site.” blog, a teacher created Google Document, and/or “Kid Blog Links to an external site.” or Canvas discussion. Have the students communicate.

Identify 3 forms of digital communication. Use an application with a sticker library, such as Kidspiration or Pixie, or give students images of applications used for communication, such as FaceTime or Skype and have students show technology tools that can be used to communicate. Some students may need a premade template with images to select from or delete to demonstrate understanding of the concept.

Another option would be clicking and dragging images of communication tools.
