To gain an understanding of the benefit of online collaboration, have the students do a brainstorming activity at their computer without talking with other students. (Students can use Inspiration, Kidspiration, pen/paper.) Discuss the difficulty of coming up with ideas on your own. Lead them to suggestions as to how we could collaborate and get all our ideas in one place. Are there digital tools that we can use to better collaborate?

To understand that students need to have a plan in order to work effectively, play the following game. Divide students into groups of four. Tell them that for this game they can’t talk or write to communicate. Give them one minute to come up with signals they will use during the game. Activity: In silence, put together a puzzle or put themselves in order of birthdays or put themselves in order of height. Discuss how effective their planning time was before the activity started. Discuss what they could have done better and what worked well.
