Timing guidelines are recommended to guide weekly instruction. Specific decisions should be made based on the needs of students. Links to an external site.

First Semester: Quarters 1 and 2
Getting to Know My Math Students
Two Weeks • August 26 - September 6
This module focuses on who our students are as learners and mathematicians.
- Learn about students' math identities to begin to foster productive dispositions towards mathematics.
- Engage students in mathematical tasks and make observations of students.
- Build a math community.
Unit 1 • Quarter 1 • Adding, Subtracting, and Working with Data
Four Weeks • September 9 - October 4 (14 lessons, 19 days)
In this unit, students add and subtract within 10, and represent and interpret categorical data.

Unit 2 • Quarter 1 • Addition and Subtraction Story Problems
Five Weeks • October 7 - November 8 (21 lessons, 22 days)
In this unit, students solve new types of story problems within 10 using the relationship between addition and subtraction. They develop an understanding of the meaning of the equal sign and connect story problems to equations.

IN THIS UNIT, STUDENTS WILL:
- Use addition and subtraction within 10 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions 1.OA.A.1
- Relate counting to addition and subtraction 1.OA.C.5
- Count on from either addend 1.OA.C.5
- Subtract by counting back or counting on 1.OA.C.5
- Use strategies to learn basic facts 1.OA.C.6
- Represent subtraction as an unknown addend 1.OA.B.4
- Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. 1.OA.D.7
- Determine the unknown in addition and subtraction equations 1.OA.D.8
- Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract 1.OA.B.3

Unit 3 • Quarter 2 • Adding and Subtracting Within 20
Six Weeks • November 11 - January 10 (27 lessons, 34 days)
In this unit, students add and subtract within 20. Students apply the properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Six Weeks • January 13 - February 21 (22 lessons, 26 days)
In this unit, students develop an understanding of place value for numbers up to 99.
Recommendation: Additional time in the unit should be spent reinforcing basic facts instruction and practice.

- Read, write, and count numbers to 120 1.NBT.1
- Bundle ten ones to represent numbers to 99 1.NBT.B.2

- Mentally find 10 more and 10 less than a two-digit number 1.NBT.C.5
- Subtract multiples of 10 from multiples of 10 1.NBT.C.6
- Relate counting to addition and subtraction 1.OA.C.5
- Use strategies to learn basic facts 1.OA.C.6
- Determine the unknown in addition and subtraction equations 1.OA.D.8

Second Semester: Quarters 3 and 4
Unit 5 • Quarter 3 • Adding Within 100
Four Weeks • February 24 - March 21 (13 lessons, 20 days)
In this unit, students use place value understanding and properties of operations to add within 100.
Recommendation: Additional time in the unit should be spent reinforcing basic facts instruction and practice as well as the addition computational strategies presented within this unit.

Unit 6 • Quarter 4 • Length Measurements Within 120 Units
Four Weeks • March 24 - April 25 (16 lessons, 18 days)
In this unit, students measure length and count up to 120 length units. They solve addition and subtraction story problems with unknowns in all positions.

In this unit, students reason with shapes and their attributes, partition shapes into equal pieces, and tell time to the hour and half hour.

Unit 8 • Quarter 4 • Putting It All Together
Two Weeks • May 27 - June 11 (10 lessons, 12 days)
In this unit, students consolidate and solidify their understanding of various concepts and skills on major work of the grade. They also continue to work toward fluency goals of the grade.
