Grade K • Visual Art Overview
The HCPSS Visual Arts program educates students through rigorous and meaningful child-centered learning experiences. Visual arts instruction is designed to foster 21st century skills encompassing critical and creative thinking, self-direction, perseverance, and accountability in the making of personal works of art.
Art is Discovery
At this developmental level, children discover the self and their immediate world through the joy of making art. Responding to their own narratives, visual forms (both natural and human made) and the work of master works, children begin to focus on self expression. In this stage of discovery, students will develop a personal schema, to expand their imagination, and to extend their visual and verbal vocabulary. Kinesthetic experiences further enhance a child's understanding of concepts. Studio experiences allow children to communicate visually their understanding of who they are and what they know about art and their world.
