number operations Vocabulary
- Addition: putting together, adding to (e.g., 2 + 3)
- Subtraction: taking apart, taking from (e.g., 3-1)
- Count On: start from any given number and count forward
- Count Back: start from any given number and count backwards
- Equal Sign (=): a symbol used to show that two amounts have the same value (Example: 384 = 384)
- Decompose: take a whole number and break it into two smaller parts

- Grab a handful of blocks or other item. Count how many in each color. How many are there altogether?
- Look at the total number of slices in a pizza, cake, or piece of fruit. How many slices does each person get so that every person gets the same amount?
- Start with 10 counters (e.g., blocks, cheerios, etc.) and roll a die to find a number. Subtract that many. How many do you have left? Keep taking away until you get to 0.
- During snack time, give your child a handful of a snack item. How many are there? After you eat one, how many are left?
- Using common items around the house, allow your child to take a handful of items and you take a handful. How many do each of you have? How many do you have when both handfuls are combined?
