Digital Citizenship
As technology continues to expand, the concept of digital citizenship has become even more important in our schools. Digital Citizenship has the same tenets as being good citizens: be kind, be respectful, and do the right thing. Throughout their elementary years, students will engage in learning activities that help build a positive digital footprint and teach digital citizenship skills in all areas of the curriculum. At home it is important for parents to continue to promote the appropriate and respectful use of technology tools with their child. Cultivate an open dialogue and conversation with your child regarding their use of technology. Consider the following:
- Regularly ask your child how they are using digital tools to collaborate with others.
- Monitor your child's use of digital tools
- Know the Terms of Service for digital tools your child is using. Many digital tools require a child to be 13 and older to create an account. (email, Facebook, Instagram, just to name a few)
- Keep up to date with changes in technology using the Common Sense Media parent pages. Links to an external site.
- Be informed about the HCPSS Responsible Use of Technology and Social Media (Policy 8080) and discuss it with your child.
